Pippy Oak Console Tables
Our clients brief; A pair of unique and graceful console tables for two narrow hallways.
A sketched proposal was presented to our clients along with a choice of timbers which would lend themselves to these pieces.
As the hallways were quite narrow, a suggestion of a prototype was made, enabling our clients to have a full visualisation of their commission in the exact proportions before they committed to the design.
Following on from the prototype, small adjustments were made, now the commissions could commence with the security all has being approved.
Curved formas were made up, these are used to hold the cores in place to gain the shape.
A succession of core materials were sandwiched simultaneously with the pippy oak veneer to the facing sides, these are then placed over the formas to create the shape, vacuum pressed and left for the adhesives to cure for 24 hours before these can be released and worked.
Once assembled, a template could be taken for the glass, the edges required a chamfer, to follow the curve of the consoles, it is important to think of every aspect in design, this is what makes a piece unique.
Each component received several fine coats of clear lacquer, enhancing the pippy in the oak, pippy oak is also known as cat’s paw oak, which refers to the small clusters of small knots.
The components were assembled incorporating the glass shelf, which is held in place with small coned oak pegs running through a pre-drilled void in the glass, glass gives elegance and lightness to the consoles without camouflaging the very beautiful and interesting pippy oak.
