Apples and Pears

Made from an oak tree which was grown on our client’s estate.
The oak tree was milled and slabbed, then left for 7 years to dry thoroughly, at the latter part of last year the slabs of oak were at a moisture level of 7% so these were collected and moved into our workshop to acclimatise.

At the first meeting notes were taken of our client’s visualisations along with dimensions and any special detailing they would like to use within the design, as this will give us a good building block to start our proposals.

One of our clients requests was to incorporate apples and pears, sketches were created using the fruit in each corner of the table, this gave the table corners a really tactile feel also softness, which we thought maybe useful as our clients toddler was just at table height! I think we have all being there…..

The table also needed to extend with the family, on researching various mechanisms we submitted two options to our clients, giving full explanations of each one, we were very pleased to say our clients chose the mechanism to be seen as opposed to hidden, using a wooden synchro slide, it’s really satisfying to watch the running cogs when opening and closing the table, and can be viewed here on this short video https://youtu.be/kyqWTLOAlfM

On approval we proceed in making, so the sketched drawing can now be created in a drawing programme, we use AutoCAD, from these accurate measurements can be taken to prepare a cutting list.

With careful selection of each slab, the timber can now being cut to lengths and widths, each component sawn, planed on all sides.
Apples and pears were carved into the opposite corners and the tabletop prior to glueing up.
After jointing, using traditional mortice and tenon joints the table could be put together for a dry assembly, checking all the joints and everything is working correctly.

Once assembled, the table is sanded through the grades to remove all machine marks and leave a smooth surface ready for oiling, by rubbing in a finishing oil, naturally brings out the true beauty of the oak, after several coats and sanded in-between the end finish feels like silk to the touch, the table is finally completed and ready for delivery.

We are a small team of cabinet makers, making and designing unique pieces, using hand selected, luxurious materials with a combination of modern machinery with traditional techniques. As our work is all bespoke, it would be an on-going task to update catalogues, so we direct all architects and designers to our website, which shows up-to-date examples of our work, also, if required we can send high resolution images, should you need these for mood boards. Working with national and international architects and interior designers and some amazing private clients, who have all given us stunning commissions to include in our portfolio. For over 40 years, John and his team of highly trained dedicated, skilled cabinetmakers have built a reputation for quality, creativity, and a high level of customer satisfaction. Our large, fully equipped workshop area includes adequate individual areas for each cabinetmaker to work in. This is impractical for larger manufacturers, who depend on volume and robotic processes and mac
